Things to do in Ella
Ella is a small town set high in the beautiful mountains. Home to the famous nine arch bridge and final destination to one of the best train rides in the world. Ella should definitely be on your Sri Lanka itinerary.
How long to stay
Most people stay 2-3 nights or 4-5 if you plan on doing more hiking and sight seeing. We stayed for 3 nights and that was plenty of time to do everything we wanted to.
Top things to do
The second highest waterfall in all of Sri Lanka at 220 metres high. The hike to the top will take you around 20-30minutes. Although it took us longer as we struggled in the heat. Make sure you go early to avoid the late morning sun as there’s not much shade on the way up. Once you get to the top you’ll have a beautiful view of the valley below in all its green glory. What makes this a bucket list adventure is the natural infinity pools on top. You can swim whilst checking out the amazing view.
Nine arch bridge
A popular tourist spot and deservedly so, the nine arch bridge is absolutely stunning. There are many viewpoints to sit and gaze at this beautiful piece of architecture, if you head there at the right time you’ll get to watch the train go by. There’s even a cafe above the bridge so you can sit with a cuppa tea whilst enjoying the view.
If you fancy seeing something a little different without all the tourists then head to the tea fields. We got there right before a storm which made for an amazing view. If you’re lucky you’ll get to meet the tea ladies who will teach you a little about what they do. We had plenty of giggles with them and actually learnt how they pick tea leaves. If they ask for a photo be prepared to pay a small tip.
Tip* This tea field is free to enter and near The Tea View Guest Ella, which is behind Ella train station.
